Set out early in the morning from Niya to Kuqa ( Kuqa is Kuche in Chinese) to travel across the Taklimakan dessert. Taklimakan dessert is the second largest shifting desert in the world; it covers an area of 337,600sqkm. From one side to the other of the Taklimakan dessert along the highway is 522km. It used to be called Death of the Sea before 1993; this is the year in which the Taklimakan Highway was built. The word Taklimakan means Death of Sea in Uyghur language: once you come in you can never come out. Enjoy the fascinating scenery of the dessert and sand dunes.
